After a law degree at Cambridge, William Maltby qualified as a chartered accountant with Peat Marwick (now KPMG). He then had a 30 year career in the City of London as a corporate financier with Morgan Grenfell and Deutsche Bank. William’s theme for his High Sheriff year is community sport, especially for the young and under-privileged. He is passionate about the benefits of sport, both physical and mental, and as a force for good in crime prevention.
Sport has been a major passion throughout his life. In rackets (the fastest racquet sport of all), he was US Amateur Champion in 1990. In real tennis (the forerunner of all racquet sports), he has been over 50’s and 60’s British champion and has regularly represented the British veterans team. He enjoys golf (handicap of about 9), tennis, padel tennis and cricket. He has been a keen sailor all his life. Together with his wife, Sarah, they have sailed their boat nearly 30,000 miles over the last 10 years, including an Atlantic crossing.
William has devoted much of his voluntary time in recent decades to administering sport. He is President of the Tennis and Rackets Association (the governing body of real tennis and rackets), having been its chairman from 2010-2015. He is Chairman of Swinley Forest Golf Club (rated as one of the top 50 golf clubs in the world). He also was a member of the Finance committee of the Marylebone Cricket Club for 13 years. He led the project to build the newest real tennis court in the UK, at Wellington College, which is now a thriving club. He was also a founder trustee of a sports related charity and a Council member of the Heart of the City, a mentoring charity based in the City of London.
Both William and his wife, Sarah, have lived in Hampshire nearly all their lives. They have resided in their current home near Kingsclere for more than 30 years. They were married in St Cross, Winchester, 41 years ago. They have 3 children and 2 grandchildren, each of whom is currently living abroad. They also have two labradors, which share their love of Hampshire and English countryside.
